One of the most asked questions is about wether we need a council approval for a carport. If fact any carport small (single) or large (double or more), DIY carport kit or installed by a professional the carport will require a council approval. The process to get a council approval is simple but it might take anywhere between 4 to 8 weeks. The first step is to make a decision about your carport size and shape. Then you will have to arrange the carport plans (can be obtain from your carport manufacturer). The next step is to get your site plan and to draw a carport in scale on your site plan. You will need to indicate the size of your carport, set backs from the boundaries and front/back of your house. It has to be written "Proposed Carport" on the plan. Then you will have to contact a Private Certifier (it some councils you can apply directly, check with your council) in order to get the application forms. The next step is to fill the forms, sign them and send all the paperwork (carport plans, certificates, site plan, application forms) to your Private Certifier. There will be a cost associated with that. If the carport is located closer then 6 m from the front a special permission called relaxation will have to be obtained. 5. Where will your carport be situated on your property? Try to think of the pros and cons of different potential locations before making a final decision.
